Rush Matters

the English Bulrush, (scirpus lacustris).
The raw material
is harvested from the Rivers Ouse, and Nene, to be hand woven
into; rush floor matting (medieval matting) and carpets, a perfectly
natural flooring, basketry to include log, shopping, and wastepaper
baskets, tableware, tablemats, hats, and hand-woven bags and
chair seating. As a Rush Merchant rush bolts are despatched by
carrier to chair seaters basketmakers and coopers throughout
the country, and a rush seating, re-cane seating and traditional re-upholstery repair service
is available. We undertake re-upholstery, only using traditional materials and not using foam or staples, clients include The National Trust, for whom a
large mat of over 200sq.m. has been woven this year for Hardwick
Hall, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and
The FitzWilliam Museum, Cambridge. Rush weaving Weekend workshops
teaching plaiting and weaving techniques are regularly held throughout
the year.
